Voress Museum-After Hours: Seeds (Live)

Live music performance

The “Seeds” duo, formed in 2023 by brothers Christos (clarinet) and Michalis (double bass) Kalkanis, brings together their classical training and diverse musical journeys into a unique sound that blends jazz, minimalism, electronic, and neoclassical influences, enriched by elements from Greek tradition and their roots in Asia Minor and Thrace.

“Seeds” continues to explore experimentation, collaboration, and the dialogue between music and other art forms—this time at the Vorres Museum! As part of their artistic research, the duo traces the emotions, memories, and sounds evoked by the museum’s unique exhibits and space.

Atmospheric compositions, improvisations inspired by the museum’s collection, and original pieces from their musical journey will create a soundscape born within the museum itself. Their performance will also feature new compositions from their upcoming album, set for release in 2025.

Bio

Seeds (Michalis & Christos Kalkanis)

The “Seeds” music duo was founded in 2023 by brothers Michalis and Christos Kalkanis, merging their classical training with a contemporary, experimental sound.

Michalis Kalkanis holds a Diploma in Double Bass from the Filippos Nakas Conservatory and a degree from the Department of Music Science and Art at the University of Macedonia. He completed his Master’s (MRes in Creative Music Technology) at the University of Hull (UK). He is a member of the Athens Symphony Orchestra while also composing for his own projects and collaborating with acclaimed artists across Greece and Europe.

Christos Kalkanis is a Diploma holder in Clarinet from the State Conservatory of Thessaloniki and a graduate of the University of Macedonia, where he also completed his Master’s in Musical Arts – Clarinet Performance. He composes music for theater productions, collaborates with well-known artists in Greece, and teaches clarinet at a music school.

With “Seeds,” the two musicians unite their artistry for the first time, crafting a dynamic, contemporary sound where double bass, clarinet, and piano meet electronic elements. Raised in a home filled with musical instruments and influences from classical and Greek traditional music, they have developed a deep sense of musical connection, which is evident in the cohesion and expressive power of their atmospheric, intimate compositions.

The duo has already performed at major events, including Jazz Ahead (Bremen, Germany), Athens City Festival, Aglan Jazz Festival, and Poetry Moves Festival (Nicosia, Cyprus).

In the summer of 2024, Seeds took part in three projects at the Kournos Music Festival (Lemnos) as resident artists, collaborating with artists from various fields, such as choreographer Antonis Vais, conductor Andreas Levisianos, and Renaud Herbin, one of Europe’s leading puppeteers.

In 2025, Seeds will release their debut album, marking the next step in their musical journey.
